The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the option to question specific decisions from the official, echoing the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
