Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these treatments must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
