Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among numerous UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
